Making Your Business Handicap Accessible

Making Your Business Handicap Accessible

You are about to open your business and are ready to welcome your customers. As you do final inspections on your building, you realize that it needs more work to be accessible to those with disabilities. Here are a few ways to make your building easier to navigate by someone in a wheelchair or with a cane.

Getting In

The first thing you should do to your building to make in more accessible is to modify the entrance to it. Install a ramp for wheelchairs to the front door to help those who have trouble getting inside. If your front door is higher than a ramp will allow, put in a cargo lift alabama then build a walkway to the door. Be sure these are wide enough for a chair to be pushed through.

Getting a Table

Once your customer gets inside, you will want to make sure that they can get around inside. Ensure that there is seating on the main floor where a wheelchair can get to easily and set up tables in this space that are at the level for these guests. If your customers have to step up to get to the seating area, put a ramp or two in to accommodate for them. This is important also to install ramps for the restrooms if the entrances to these are also a level above the main floor.

Adding Space

You will need to have at least one handicap stall in your bathroom. If your restrooms are small, you might need to remodel to allow for this. If you have multiple stalls, you can tear one down to make a larger accessible stall. You will also want to have sinks that can easily be used by someone in a wheelchair and hang your paper towel machines or hand air dryers low enough that these clients can use them.
