Public Theology and What Affects It.
You cannot easily wish away the need to speak for Christ in the public at all times. This is a very important thing but it has several problems facing it. As you read this article to the end, some of these problems will be manifest but see The Reformed Conservative.
The British and evangelical church is a cause of the first problem. The reason for this is the failure to devote needed devotion to construct public theology. Many churches loathe any public engagements since they see them as a distraction for their mission. Indeed, what is biblical is this view itself. This is a view that wants in biblical knowledge. It is so worrying that many churches will not want to have anything to do with public life since to them, it is sinful.
Such an engagement requires a proper rationale and this is what is lacking but see The Reformed Conservative. This task has been left to a few courageous church organizations. Unfortunately, this situation may remain unchanged for long, until there is a change in paradigm. This is a very sad truth.
The situation is not as bad in the US as it is in other parts of the world. Sadly, there is very; little to celebrate since it is far from where it should be.
It is true that there is a need to ensure that people do not make oversimplified responses to ethical issues. The entire thing is endangered by the fact that there is no clear public theological framework. The complexity of issues are getting clearer by the day. This is an issue that requires more than a mere yes/no response. A yes/no approach will not be useful to address end of life issues. Divorce and capital punishment are the other complex issues. These have been rightly described as the Wikipedia-level simplicity.
Christians become aware of particular issues when there are proposed changes to the law. The perplexing thing is that the Christians may fail to understand that these changes have been on the offing for many years on a row. A case in point is that Christians lost the battle for same-sex marriage form the mid-1960s but not in March 2013. The Christian framework that existed in law was continually challenged since the 1960s. The failure by Christians to participate in public engagements to guard their faith led to the allowing of same-sex marriage since March 2013.
As long as it is needful, Christians will need to shout but we must also recommit ourselves to worship God in the proper manner but see The Reformed Conservative.
